When I first heard that the next version of Fedora Linux will have the codename Leonidas I thought it was pretty good for a codename. Then today I was over at ArsTecnica which notes that the Fedora team originally said the codename came from a ship in the Union navy. But the catch was that the ship USS Leonidas was a junker the navy sank to help create a barricade against other ships.
Basically the name was submitted to be a codename via the Fedora Wiki page and then was put up to a vote. The original submitter simply said it “was a ship in the Union navy”. They did not expand on it any further and the developers didn’t check out the story.
It makes me think that whoever submitted the name may not have exactly been a fan of Fedora. He had to have known that people would vote for it because they will think of the movie 300 and not a naval junker. Or maybe he was just wishing for Fedora to sink like the Leonidas… dead weight and just an obstacle for the competition.
Hopefully Leonidas turns out to be a good release from the Fedora team and gives the competition a good 300 style run for their money.
