Today CherryPal has announced their new laptop the ”Green Maraschino” Netbook. What makes this Netbook different from others is that it is running an energy efficient Cloud OS. The Green Maraschino is a flavor of Linux that has been designed to run in the Cloud and save energy but there is slight twist to this one.
Instead of paying a monthly fee for your cloud computing it is paid for by advertising dollars. There is not a lot of clarity on this one but it sounds like it could be something like the crappy toolbars that used to “pay you to surf”. The first thing I would ask before buying one of these things is “Can I pay to not see the ads?”.
The computer is also supposed to be very energy efficient hence the “Green” part and has a 5 hour batter life. This has a lot to do with the hardware in the laptop as well as the OS. Things such as the 8 GB SSD drive help to reduce power consumption. According to the website there are no moving parts inside the laptop which is a good indication of a passive cooling setup.
The Netbook comes with Firefox, OpenOffice, Video, Music Player, Skype, and probably Pidgeon Instant Messenger. That is pretty standard for most Linux distro’s but it is nice to see that in a Cloud OS they have made sure the basics are there.
At only $250 it is a pretty cheap Netbook that would probably be a prime candidate for Android or another trim Linux build. Maybe the OS isn’t half bad but at this point I do have my doubts seeing as the computer is debuting at the Sundance Film Festival. Yes that’s right I said Sundance.
